Why Your Wrap Needs a Ceramic Coating

A Note on Films

Vinyl and Paint Protection films (PPF) are commonly used for either cosmetics or protection. PPF is the more robust, thicker option, offering the best protection against scratches and rock chips. In contrast, vinyl wraps offer the best customization (color options & graphics abilities) but lack physical protection as a thinner material. You can even apply PPF over a vinyl wrap to get the best of two worlds when the application calls for the best protection - however, this can quickly get costly for larger areas. Alternatively, you can use colored PPF for a more durable color-change product. Either way, a ceramic coating still benefits any of these options.

A ceramic coating provides a sacrificial layer that protects your films from the effects of UV exposure - fading, cracking, and delamination are things that happen as your vinyl breaks down. This also benefits PPF as well. Other benefits include stain & chemical resistance and easier maintenance. A coating not only extends the life of your film but also makes it easier to keep clean and fresh.

Ceramic coatings and Nanotechnology

A ceramic coating creates a slick & hydrophobic barrier on the surface. Modern ceramic coatings incorporate nanotechnology into their formulas. Tiny nanoceramic particles fill in minor surface imperfections, smoothing out the surface and leaving a layer of protection. With these tiny imperfections filled in, grime, oils, traffic films, and other contaminants have more difficulty sticking to a surface. This shields the surface and vastly improves cleaning.

How long does a ceramic coating last?

The market is saturated with coatings advertised to last anywhere from 3 months to a “lifetime.” All the many debates aside, one thing stands true amongst all ceramic coatings - they need good maintenance to meet and exceed their expected lifespans. It’s an excellent guideline to treat lifespans as a comparison factor between coatings unless the coating stands true to its longevity claims in the real world.

Important note: Due to the top coats of these film products, a ceramic coating will not last much longer than a year on film. Reapplying a coating at least every year is recommended to maintain your ceramic protection.

Bird poo damage, same day. While it's best to avoid parking under trees, powerlines, etc, bird poo can sometimes be unavoidable. Removing it ASAP is best, especially if the vehicle is uncoated. A ceramic coating will help slow the burn, but the acidity will quickly cause damage if it's hot enough.

The Benefits of a Ceramic Coating

Combats fading, oxidation & staining

UV rays are the #1 enemy for vinyl longevity. Nano ceramic coatings take the brunt of UV ray exposure - protecting wrap from fading, cracking, and breaking down. You can also expect protection from chemical and organic staining - especially great for film as it’s more prone to staining than paint. You’ll extend your wrap’s natural longevity by safeguarding it with added protection.

Improved cleaning

Ceramic coatings are highly hydrophobic. This means fewer contaminants on your surface. Bugs, animal mess, oils, and other contaminants will be much easier to wipe off from a coated surface.

High gloss

Amplify the shine and glossiness of your surface.  With matte and satin surfaces, a coating typically adds a bit of sheen and depth to your color - something most people enjoy. Note the effect varies depending on the product used.

Final Thoughts

A ceramic coating is perfect for protecting your surfaces from the elements, making them easier to keep clean and increasing shine. It’s a worthy investment if you value your film’s longevity or the time you’ll spend NOT cleaning. Contact your local ceramic coating installer to get started and experience the benefits.
